YEAH!

Saturday, October 21st, 2006

Man, I really need some way to video flying now. It’s much much more intersting these days :)

The TP 2 cell 910 mAh ProLite batteries on Hobby-Lobby’s page are great! I only have one, but they are a huge improvement over the NiMH batteries that I have. They’re more expensive, of course, but definitely worth it.

Wow, Great Shot!

Crazy picture of a walrus.

Wow, that’s an amazing image. It kinda headlines this article on the BBC. Wish it was bigger, I’d make it my desktop at work.

Actually, it seems to fill a 1280×1024 space ok - apparently it stretches well.

Please, Some Good Weather!!

Tuesday, October 17th, 2006

Gah! This weather is not making it easy for me to practice outside! Either it’s windy or its raining :-P

I’ve been following my plan, but I’d really like to get outside and try putting some of my practice to use - the space inside is so small and my correcting so slow that I can’t really put it up in the air in my living room unless it’s tail-in (or side, on a good day). I doubt I’ll ever like putting it nose-in inside, but my eventual goal would be that I could do it.

I amused myself - ok, gave myself terrible adrenaline rushes - by flying between my living room and kitchen. There is maybe an inch of clearance to each side of the rotor blades as it passes through. That means I’ve got no room for error AND a lot of turbulence (on top of the turbulence because I’m inside). Fun times, but does rattle your nerves :)

Nose-in

Goals are made to be broken, right? Hmmm… maybe they should be ;)

Saturday I was gone all day (to a corn maze, then trying to help someone with a computer issue and then out all night) so no practice that day. Sunday was way too windy outside, which is where I’d planned to practice.

I did get two packs in inside, though. I’ve got the training gear on it again and am “driving” it on the floor. I think I’ll stick with that through this week, doing at least 2 packs nose-in driving. Then maybe this weekend get it actually into the air nose-in. The driving part should give me the training to not crash instantly when I get it off the ground… I hope

Goals

It’s good to have goals, thus I’m setting one for myself - start learning nose-in hovering this weekend.

Does it count if I just look at it while it’s on the ground ;)

Outdoor Video

Tuesday, October 10th, 2006

I’ve decided to post what I’ve got. Unfortunately it isn’t very good quality (the video, not the flying). Small digital cameras are not meant to film high-speed, outdoor, longer-than-close-range distance stuff :)

I’ll probably have to either clip them drastically or at least cut them to show those parts where you can see something.

I’ll add them on to the end of this when they’re ready (guess that will be tonight).

[Edit] And here they are:
Outdoor 01
Outdoor 02

Creatively named, too! The 2nd one can also be called “Cut in the nick of time” - I’ll leave the video sleuths to figure out why. ;)

Battery Charging Box

Wednesday, October 4th, 2006

So this is a sketch of what I want to build (my design and my artwork, deal with it ;) ).

Picture of Battery Charging Box

The box would be made using a cash box and an old PC power supply. I have the charger and the power supply but haven’t bought the cash box to house it yet because I’ll need either a dremel or someone who has a small metal shop to build it.

The wires aren’t showing because SketchUp (which is pretty slick) doesn’t make that too easy. Or I haven’t figured out how to do it right, yet. Hmm… well, I could put up an image of the back, but suffice it to say that there’s a cutout so that you can plug the power into the old power supply. The green divider is to separate the charging batteries into their own fire-resistant section.

Oh, and the sketch uses actual measurements. The box needs to be at least 4" deep, 13" wide and 10" deep in order for things to fit properly.

Finally, a Decent Charger

Wednesday, October 4th, 2006

I’ve been dealing with the pain of having to charge the batteries for 2 - 2 1/2 hours to fly for ~10 minutes because the provided charger is slow (I won’t get technical). Also, the provided charger has to be watched so that you don’t overcharge (and thus fry) your batteries.

Well NO MORE! Finally bit the bullet and bought a decent charger for my needs. Not only can it charge the batteries in about an hour, but it can do two at once AND it can be a little more laxely monitored. It has both time and charge detection capabilities, so it won’t be frying my batteries if I forget to check often enough.

Now it will take an 1 hour to fly for ~20 minutes instead of 4-5 to fly for 20.
